Did the President really make this statement or joke?

Funmi Iyanda had this on her Twitter account last night. So I asked, did the president actualy made this statement or joke? I serious doubt it.

So, l take it that Nigerians are not amused by Mr president's joke offer to help Kenya fight terror.

Paolo Di Canio: Sunderland sack head coach after just 13 games

Sunderland have sacked head coach Paolo Di Canio after Saturday's 3-0 defeat at West Brom left them bottom of the Premier League.
The 45-year-old Italian has won three of his 13 matches since being appointed in March and the Black Cats have one point from five games this season.

"An announcement will be made in due course regarding a permanent successor," read a club statement.
In the meantime, coach Kevin Ball will take charge of the first-team squad.

The statement added: "The club would like to place on record its thanks to Paolo and his staff and wishes them well for the future."

Just after 5 games this season, come on. Canio is just the first causality, others will follow.

Mario Balotelli finally misses a penalty: Ballon d’or for Reina

Maria Balotelli Penalty Stats: 27 taken – 26 scored – 1 saved

Maria Balotelli missed a penalty as Napoli kept up their 100 per cent start to the 2013-14 season with an impressive 2-1 over AC Milan at San Siro on Sunday.
The visitors started the game brightly and were soon ahead through Miguel Britos, with Gonzalo Higuain doubling their lead just after half-time.

Mario Balotelli squandered the chance to regain a foothold in the match, missing the first penalty of his career, though the Italy international scored a brilliant consolation strike at the death.

Kenya Mall Shooting: At Least 59 Killed, 175 Injured in 'Senseless Act of Violence'

At least 30 hostages remain trapped inside an upscale mall in Nairobi, Kenya more than 24 hours after unsuspecting shoppers were met with a siege of terror when attackers dressed in black, wearing facemasks and vests, threw grenades and opened fire on unsuspecting crowds.

Kenya’s interior Cabinet secretary Joseph Lenku said at least 59 people were killed and at least 175 others were injured in the attack. While more than 1,000 people were rescued from the shopping center, Kenyan forces continue to swarm the mall are as a tense standoff ensues.
"The priority is to save as many lives as possible," Lenku said.

Four Americans are amongst the injured. Two victims -- including one child – remain hospitalized, the official said.
Three British nationals are confirmed dead in the attack, as French and Canadian officials said that their nations each had two citizens killed.
Officials say there are at least 10 to 15 gunmen involved. Initially it was believed the gang were armed robbers but it soon became clear the attackers were targeting non-Muslims.
"The gunmen told Muslims to stand up and leave. They were safe, and non-Muslims would be targeted," said witness Elijah Kamau who was shopping in the mall.
The gunmen hit one of the most upscale places in Nairobi.
The Westgate Mall is a destination for Kenya's elite. It bills itself as the city's premier mall, boasting that it offers customers a "first world interior" and a "safe and serene environment." It was opened in 2007 and has more than 80 stores.
Somalia's al-Qaidia-linked rebel group, al-Shabab, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that it was in retaliation for the 2011 involvement of Kenyan forces in their country to fight the Islamic insurgents.
"They're seeking to embarrass Kenya and get them to withdraw their troops," Associated Press reporter Jason Straziuso, who is currently in Nairobi, told ABC News."These hardcore terrorists know that this generates news in Europe and America."
MT. (my take)
So these people killed innocent children, parents, men and women just to send a message to Europe and America? What a senseless way to live life. What is the purpose, to what intent, at whose profit, what kind of name or reputation would it bring them? My God! save us from such oh Lord. May we never be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

These people just went into a mall to buy things and now some of them would never get home. What a shame, all in the name of what? Relig……. Shame!!!
Most of the hostages have been rescued and the majority of the mall secured, report has it.

EPL ROUND UP: Arsenal beat Stoke with 2 assists from amazing Ozil; Spurs left it late with Paulhino goal.

Magical Ozil. Assist king

Arsenal seems to have perfected their set-piece skills as all their goals came from set pieces.

Per Mertesacker and Bacary Sagna rose higher to score with their heads while Aaron Ramsey scored his seventh goal in eight Arsenal games this season.

Stoke however produced a well worked goal from a defense-splitting pass that was finished by Geoff Cameron.

See, even with all those millions you boys can't score. Just wait!!!

Tottenham HotSpur were almost forced to a near draw away by a resistive Cardiff side, that’s until the 92nd minute when Paulinho netted his first Premier League goal and handed Spurs the victory.

Spurs had dominated the match but had efforts by Roberto Soldado, Christian Eriksen, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Paulinho denied by Cardiff Keeper David Marshall excellent saves.

Spurs will be delighted with the victory as it pushed them to second place on the League Table, higher than Chelsea.

Man United beaten black and blue in first derby of new coach.

David Moyes, Man United new coach was handed his worst defeat in his role as Manchester United new coach when his team was defeated 4 – 1 by Manchester City in their first derby of the season.

It was Manchester United worst defeat at the Etihad Stadium since 2004 as Manchester City ran riot.
Sergio Aguero scored twice, and Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri added further goals, with Wayne Rooney grabbing a consolation in a 4-1 triumph for City manager Manuel Pellegrini in his first Manchester derby.

Tales of two coaches

For United boss David Moyes it was a desperate day, but not all that bad as it was an echo of a 5-1 defeat suffered by his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson at Maine Road in 1989 before his trophy-gathering had begun.

Robin van Persie was ruled out with a groin injury.

Something good can still come out of this but it would take a lot for Manchester United to still go ahead and win the league.

Should Pregnant Women Be Weightlifting?

Exercise is essential for a healthy pregnancy, but one photo of a pregnant woman weightlifting has ignited a fiery debate on how much pregnant women should sweat.

Lea-Ann Ellison, 35, a stay-at-home mom in Los Angeles, is eight months pregnant with her third child and attends regular CrossFit classes at her local gym. Last week, Ellison emailed the company touting her success on the workout and included a a phone of herself lifting weight. A few days later, the company posted the photo on its Facebook page, subsequently triggering an outcry on social media. Ellison received thousands of comments — many of which were negative — between her personal Facebook page, the CrossFit Facebook page, several media outlets and email.

The question I like to ask is, should women in the last trimester of pregnancy be exercising especially carrying heavy weights?

Look what giving up drink (wine) for a month can do to your face: (a miracle)

 Week 1 and Week 2
week 3 and week 4

We all worry about the effect an extra glass of wine has on our waistline — but what about on our skin?
To find out if ditching alcohol can improve your complexion, we challenged Laura Hogarth, a 40-year-old mother-of-two from Falkirk, to spend a month without consuming a drop of booze.
Before this, Laura drank about 15 units of alcohol a week — which equates to around five large glasses of wine and is just one unit a week above the recommended national guidelines for women.

Week One
Laura says: ‘Urgh, this picture looks horrific. I look awful. My skin is red and flushed, all the way down my decolletage. My forehead and nose are shiny and there are rough, dry patches across my cheeks.
‘More worryingly, I don’t remember thinking my skin actually looked this bad.
It can take weeks of no drinking for the blood vessels to constrict fully and redness to disappear altogether.
‘If you drink regularly over a number of years — and especially in larger quantities — small peripheral veins can become permanently enlarged after being repetitively expanded, causing thread veins and permanent skin damage.’

Week two
Laura says: ‘What a miracle! I’m sleeping for longer in the mornings and getting up less frequently during the night.
‘Before, I might have woken up once or twice — whether I’d had a drink or not — but now I am sleeping like a baby. It might have helped that it was also the school holidays, so the children were sleeping in as well, but I am definitely waking up feeling brighter and more alert.
‘I’ve also noticed that in the evenings I’m not snacking as much. Normally I’d crave crisps with my usual glass of wine, but sipping a glass of lime and soda means I don’t feel like junk food. The urge just isn’t there

'The spider veins remain on her lips and nose, but these might take longer to go, if at all. Facial puffiness is caused by the gentle leakage of fluid from enlarged blood vessels.
‘During the night, when we lie flat for a number of hours, this fluid tends to accumulate around our eye-lids and cheeks.
'This is because lying down helps gravity push it in that direction, but also because this is where the skin is loosest and therefore has the most room to accommodate excess fluid.
‘During the day, as we stand up and move about, the trapped fluids are released back into circulation, so the facial swelling reduces.
'After a period of time without alcohol, our blood vessels constrict, so less fluid will accumulate in the first place and skin will look less swollen after a night’s rest.’

Week three
Laura says: ‘By now I’m noticing a difference in my skin’s dryness, and not just on my face.
'It sounds unpleasant, but when I used to take off leggings or trousers I often noticed dry flakes of skin left behind. Now there’s hardly anything.
‘Equally the backs of my hands are looking less dry and — unless I’m imagining it — marginally  less wrinkly.
‘When my mother visited this week, she said how less blotchy I was looking — success! A friend also said my skin tone looked more even.
‘Euan and I have noticed less of a difference day-by-day. That’s probably because it’s such a gradual change, but friends and family are noticing the improvement in my appearance which has given me a real thrill.
‘This has made me feel braver and more confident.
Dr Lowe says: ‘There’s a significant reduction in facial redness, even around Laura’s nose and lips. She looks healthier, less puffy and slimmer, especially around her cheeks and jowls.
‘Stopping drinking alcohol means you reduce your calorie intake. There are up to 185 calories in a large glass of wine.
'Not only that, alcohol has the secondary effect of stimulating appetite, so I’m not surprised Laura isn’t snacking as much.
‘Drinking alcohol also makes the skin dry because increased blood flow though the skin speeds everything up and stimulates skin cells to renew and shed quicker.
‘Studies have shown high levels of alcohol consumption can also exacerbate dry skin conditions such as psoriasis and facial eczema.’

Week four
Laura says: ‘While Euan hasn’t noticed my mood changing, by week four I’m feeling invigorated and so much better in myself.
‘I’m getting fewer headaches and have much more energy. My lips are less dry, too — I usually get a cold sore almost every week —  but since ditching the booze not a single one has appeared.
‘Better still, I’ve lost 3lb and my face definitely looks slimmer. I have to admit, it’s been far easier to abstain from alcohol than I’d feared. I said no to a few barbecues, just in case I was tempted, but I’ve enjoyed feeling healthier and brighter, especially in the mornings.
‘On the whole, the month has sailed by. I’m going to try and stick to the no drinking rule — or at least cut out alcohol during the week.
'I’ve only had one major lapse since the end of my booze-free month. It was the very first night after the experiment and I went out with a group of friends to celebrate.
‘We drank far too much, and guess what? When I woke in the morning I looked red as anything and noticed a small dry patch of skin had re-emerged. It just goes to show alcohol does a lot worse than just give you a hangover!’
Dr Lowe says: ‘Although the changes between the final two weeks are subtler, this last photo shows a much improved Laura.
'Her eyes are more open and brighter. This, again, is because of the increased blood flow caused by alcohol. If more blood passes through the eye’s surface, it looks duller and more bloodshot.
‘After four weeks without alcohol, the blood vessels have constricted and her eyes are bright white once more.
'By now the redness across her cheeks and neck has vastly diminished and the thread veins around her nose have largely disappeared.
‘This is a classic example of what I’d hope to see for someone who has given up alcohol — and if she sticks to it, she’ll only feel and look even better.’

Alcohol does do more harm to the skin than just a hang over.

Rochas’ abortion law should stay

I read this piece by Abimbola Adelakun (Punch) and I found it very interesting. It requires a bit of patience but if you read it, you would be glad you did, I was.

The politician in the governor and his “co-conspirators” in the state House of Assembly might eventually kowtow rather than cause offence. Already, the favoured Nigerian political propaganda of my-enemies-are-at-the-gate has been creeping into official communication. But the law should not be reversed because it has merits that cannot be invalidated by an Abrahamic ethos rooted in the Stone Age. Okorocha should maintain steadfastness in the face of underwhelming conservatives who reduce the complexity of human existence to the lessons of their Sunday School classes. Meanwhile, I find it curious that the most vociferous campaigners against the law are men.

It does say a lot, doesn’t it?

There are a few Op-Eds supporting the law but most of them have argued for the law on the basis of rape and incest. Abortion, for them, should be permitted only in those circumstances. These pro-choice activists, with all due respect, are dancing round the main issue as research shows that women who procure abortion as a result of rape and incest are less than one per cent of the totality of those who request it. The elephant in the room is that most women have abortion because they simply do not want the developing foetus.

I can already hear conservatives screaming, “Why have sex if you don’t want a child?” Well, sex is primarily a physiological need and humans necessarily crave it; pregnancy is one of the possible outcomes. Besides, food makes us fat but we still eat, don’t we? The punitive stance of yes-you-had-your-fun-now-you-must-accept-the-consequences is inconsiderate and patriarchal. It empties the burden of intimacies on women’s heads; as if every sexual encounter is fun and, the woman took all of it.

The misconceptions around abortion need deconstruction. First is that women who seek abortion are promiscuous. Aside the subjectivity of the term “promiscuous,” studies show many married women seek abortion, too. Second is that children are generally a blessing. Well, not in all cases especially if we go by Nigeria’s 52,000 annual incidence of maternal mortality. Third, all children come from God and deserve to be born. Not at all children are a biological reaction; God does not make them, regardless of what miracle preachers say. Children are born because people have sex. And to those who make the banal argument of if-your-parents-did-not-give-birth-to-you-would-you-be-here, I ask in return, “Since your birth, what good have you done the planet?”

One thing conservatives should note is this: most women would rather avoid abortion altogether. I once attended a conference where a doctor who runs an abortion clinic read from the logbook her patrons filled after the process. It was agonising to listen. The women, one could tell, suffered guilty consciences. If the conservatives add to this the economics of abortion, they will get a picture of what the decision is really like for women who have to procure it. Others who trump up the argument of infanticide need to understand that matters of sex have many grey areas and there cannot be an umbrella definition of virtue to cover everyone sufficiently.

Issues around abortion are tense everywhere, even in the so-called liberal societies. Nevertheless, countries legalise the practice for pragmatic purposes as women who want an abortion will procure it regardless of risk to their health and, even, life. For all it’s worth, such women deserve support, legal and social.

Abortion legalisation does not mean women would start trooping to hospitals through the front door. Abortion is hugely stigmatising in many societies and the impact of this law will only be marginal for a while. The poor and working-class women will most likely continue patronising quacks. It will take time before society fully reconciles itself to certain realities.

Those who use religious precepts to counter arguments on abortion should understand that not all women are religious; some of us don’t want our choices decided by the injunctions in someone else’s religion. I am a non-theist; there is no rationale why my choices should be regulated by Roman Catholic principles. There are even multiple studies that show that on issues like contraceptives, Catholics are already ahead of the Vatican dictates, so why not let us be realistic?

The culturalist position on the issue is not more tenable either. Culture is not immutable; otherwise Nigerians would still be killing twins. And let’s not get started on the myth of superior African values. Cultural values are relative and Africans have no more mores that trump other places in the world where abortion is legalised. That we are more pretentious or too coy to deal with certain subjects is not superiority.

Let’s note: Abortion is never compulsory, either for the doctor or the woman involved. It is an alternative for those who exhaust their options. Nobody should therefore use their influence on political institutions to impose their position on everyone (otherwise, why resist Boko Haram?) That Imo State is Catholic-dominated does not make it a religious state. Okorocha should allow this law as a test of strength and virtues of those who preach love and tolerance on Sunday but live otherwise during the week.

Finally, I want to preempt those who will ask if I have any value for life at all. The answer is yes, I do. But I am also a realist so like Bill Clinton, I believe abortion should be safe, legal and rare. What our conservatives should debate is “rare,” not total suppression. It is delusional to assume people will always want every child when we know that mistakes do happen; people miscalculate. Nature itself is inconsistent and so folks find themselves with children they do not want.

When that happens, every woman should be left to consult her conscience and arrive at her own decision. Not everyone woman will choose an abortion anyway. The Igbo have a saying, “Egbe belu, ugo belu.” It roughly translates as live and let live. I read that in Chinua Achebe’s book.

ASUU STRIKE: Students urge FG and ASUU to re-negotiate

I said this would happen when I wrote a piece title: Pensioner, 71, sues ASUU. Read it Here and now it’s beginning to manifest. If ASUU doesn’t get their acts back to school soon, even their own students and those who were in support of their course would begin to see them as the part of the problem.

Students have urged Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to go back to the negotiating table to resolve the crisis in federal universities as students are tired of sitting at home.
Acting Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students John Shima, while addressing a press conference in Abuja, said Nigerian students have been idle for more than two months and are now engaging in anti-social vices.

Shima called for a needs assessment of polytechnics and colleges of education as was done for universities to ascertain the level of decay in those institutions.

“This may also stop unions in those institutions from embarking on their own strike,” he said.
NANS appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to not delay in filling the vacancy of Minister of education as there are many urgent needs in the ministry requiring attention.
The association urged Jonathan to appoint someone with competence and understanding of the challenges in the sector.

13-Year old girl raped by her father and friend for 7 years.

This story is culled from P.M News: A 13-year old girl has narrated how her biological father, Stephen Chimaraobi,  and his friend, Paul Oha, raped her for seven years in their Ojodu home in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.
Following her revelation, the police at Grammar School Division, Ojodu, arrested her father and his friend.

Chimaraobi from Delta State has remained single after his wife left him, while Oha from Mbaise in Imo State, is married and has two kids.
The victim revealed that her 42-year old father and his friend started defiling her when she was six years old and continued till she became 13 without each of them knowing until she reported the matter to the police.

She said she did not know the damage they were doing to her  until now that she became an emotional wreck.
The traumatized victim told the police that her mother left her in the care of his father at  their home in Yetunde Morgan Estate, Ojodu, when she was six years old.

She said her father did not re-marry after her mother left him and he took advantage of her mother’s absence to rape her repeatedly.
The little girl said she was helpless because her father warned her not to tell anyone otherwise he would kill her.

She said while her father was defiling her, his friend, Oha, who lives with his wife and two children in the same estate, joined in sexually assaulting her.
She told the police that Oha usually comes to their house at odd time when her father had gone to work to have sex with her.

She said after that, he would warn her not to tell anyone about it, including her father.
“My father’s friend after abusing me, will ask me not to tell my father, not knowing that my father was also abusing me,” she told the police.
The victim who has started learning hair dressing, said she went to the police to report the matter when the trauma became unbearable.

When P.M.NEWS visited Chimaraobi’s residence, his neighbours confirmed the incident.
On the allegation by the victim, the neighbours said they were not surprised because there has been rumours like that and nobody was courageous enough to confront Chimaraobi or inform the police.

They condemned the act and said the police should ensure that the victim get justice.
They also said they knew Oha as his friend who usually visited the girl and her father and said they did not know  his visit was to defile the little girl.
At Oha’s residence within the estate, his wife expressed shock over the matter.
She said all she knew was there was a time Chimaraobi asked them to keep the girl in their house when he went to work outside Lagos.  At the station where the suspects were detained, the Divisional Police Officer,  D. P. O.  Uduak Udoh said that the victim came to the station to report that her father and his friend abused her.

He said the police have since started investigation on the matter and if our reporter needed any information, he should go to the PPRO.
Police sources told P.M.NEWS that the mother of the victim and the relations of Chimaraobi have been invited as part of the investigation to authenticate the girl’s allegation.
Chimaraobi told P.M.NEWS that he did not rape the victim as she claimed and said his daughter fabricated the allegation so that she will go back to her mother.
He said he married her mother and when the victim was six years, she abandoned him and the girl and left.

Chimaraobi said that since his estranged wife left, he has been taking care of the girl and she has just finished her JSS3, while her mother has been battling him to take the girl away.
He also said he did not know his friend, Oha, was sleeping with her until she said so at the police station.
The two men were charged with defilement and rape at the Family Court in Ikeja, yesterday. The matter was adjourned till 6 November while the suspects were remanded in Kirikiri Prisons.

I find this story a little hard to swallow. The lady in this picture doesn't look like a 13-year old to me. Whatever the case, I hope the police do a thorough investigation and get to the bottom of the matter. So sad though.
